WHAT DO YOU DO?
I design custom logos, brand styling, print material (advertising, packaging and invitations), websites and digital art. I work mostly with small, local businesses but also direct and collaborate on bigger projects.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I studied advertising for one year in Brussels, then decided to leave for a business degree in London with a design management pathway. Knowing I wanted to be self-employed one day I figured: a) I couldn't go wrong because all doors would still be open, and b) I would have the advantage of management skills over my creative competitors.
How do you stand out in your field?
I have an international background; there are five countries between my nationality, where I grew up and where my parents live, meaning I moved around a lot and each chapter was a reinvention of myself. This dynamic lifestyle allowed me to be creative and continuously inspired by new places and people. Cultural encounters and adaptations have made me a very open-minded designer. I enjoy working in different languages with a diverse clientele in a variety of industries.
I might also be one of the fewer creatives that studied business instead of graphic design. Although aesthetics and presentation were priorities since childhood, I learned the theory before really diving into the practical. Almost all of my design knowledge and skills are self-taught.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
A brand identity for a local wedding flower business, an international food packaging project, improving my own online presence, and making preparations to pursue a passion project.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
My style varies depending on the project so I usually let the process guide me to the result. I suppose it has changed over the years and I expect it to keep evolving as a growing and curious person. I am aware of what is trending but I know what I like and dislike and try to stay true to myself. I'm a perfectionist with an eye for detail so I tend to like clean, elegant designs with simplicity. However my taste ranges from earthy colours, beautiful typography and vintage styles, to bold, vibrant and minimal design. I'm like a chameleon when finding creative solutions.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
My plan for some time has been to experiment with collage and typography and create sellable, digital art prints. I would like to do more work with my hands in general, like drawing and painting.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Social media marketing! I don't like recording myself (or hearing my own voice), and as a more private person I feel awkward putting myself out there so I have to find another way. I would like to avoid more hours on the computer but need to allocate time for networking and using online tools to my advantage, like Pinterest.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Be a kind of personal assistant to handle domestic chores and errands that distract me from work, and also manage my social media accounts and help reach out to new clients.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
That things have a way of falling into place and patience and strength pays off. I would have told myself to get more work experience before freelancing and not to waste time. Oh! and– do a foundation year before applying to a BA in graphic design.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
How to better manage colours and file specifications for different printing jobs, there is always room for mistakes here. Also how to market my business in general; ironically my business degree didn't teach me how to get clients.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I like working with businesses that I can relate to or have a personal connection with, so I hope to work more with creative, lifestyle brands in industries such as fashion, food, beauty, wellness, interior design and travel. I love designing visual identities and am obsessed with beautiful packaging design!
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
A client that respects and trusts my expertise as a designer, gives me creative freedom and is like-minded. I like jobs that present new challenges, get me excited and have a nice purpose.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
I start by sending out a branding questionnaire and once I have received all the information, I calculate a price based on the type of project, complexity and timeline. I offer fixed prices for visual identities and discounts on bundled services like a full 'Brand Design Package' which includes stationary and web design. Any extras are charged by the hour which also depends on the type of work.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Keeping up with design news and trends, looking around, traveling, collecting inspirations and following designers I admire.
