WHAT DO YOU DO?
That title is thrown around a lot these days but I essentially began as a Visual Designer for web, learned UI/UX, growth initiatives, product market fit, and put the two together to make apps, websites, and all things digital beautiful and functional.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I went to university at the Academy of Arts in San Francisco. Studying and graduating with a degree in Web Design, I moved to Los Angeles to begin my start up journey. I worked for Parachute Home, Headspace, Winc (Club W) and ended up the last year at Joymode.
How do you stand out in your field?
I am extroverted. Most designers are behind the scenes and stick to what they know. I love communication, and interacting with people. I step in to the occasional art direction role, and help out with whatever we need to make our product stand out from the rest!
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I am doing a full redesign of Joymode.com it has been quite a task as our site was designed originally by engineers with little design and UX knowledge, I took these bones and built the shell around them to make the website stand out in the world.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
Clean lines, always. I love to design cleanly and on the grid making my work seem bold, yet minimalistic. As Dieter Rams once said, Design as little as possible. I take this approach to create clean experiences that are easy on the eyes.
WE ALL HAVE MULTIPLE SKILLS OR WORK IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD FOCUS ON MORE?
I wish I could focus more on building things with my hands. I've always aspired to create my own brand, with art, and fashion at the focus. That being said I've always been very handy and love to be outside. My dream is to build my own house with all functional design, probably in the desert, where I enjoy going on the weekends to reset my creative energy.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Lack of passion. I am working with folks at my company that lack the passion to be in the start up world. We have so many things to accomplish, but we need to creative vision and leadership to take us to the next level. My job is one that needs open communication, passion, and love of design.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Organize, organize, organize. I would love for someone to help me organize all my projects, my day to day things such as planning, and coffees and such. It is one of my flaws.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I wish I told myself to not worry so much about the outcome but enjoy the journey of becoming what you want to be. Life is constantly in flux and you have to be able to adapt to your circumstance instead of worrying about your career and all those things that "seem to matter."
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
How to become a great, passionate designer with insight into running their own company. It is my dream to once run my own business so I think the more insight I can gain into the subject the better.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Product Design, UI/UX, start ups, and cool companies. I want to be a part of a company that cares about what they are doing in the world, and is doing something on the positive end of the spectrum ( i.e. wellness, physical and mental health, or environmentalism).
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
My ultimate job is flexible, passionate, and hard working. I want to be able to do the work I need to do in a timely manner. I am a strict believe it is quality of time and not quantity. This job would be incredibly creative, and we could create products that will truly change the way we look at things.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
My salary is 120k. I am always looking for full-time jobs because I enjoy the commitment to a brand or creative agency. I freelance for $80 an hour, which includes consultation, art direction, ui/ux design, and visual design.
WHO IS A CREATIVE THAT HAS HELPED YOU ELEVATE YOUR WORK?
My friend @adamdiehl He was once my manager at Headspace and he truly was the one to lead me into the Product Design field. He gave me valuable insight and taught me a lot about design. We have a great friendship now and still feel like I can ask him anything about design and he will have a thoughtful answer.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
Just message me as a friend! I hate taking things too seriously, if we're going to work together we're going to need a good sense of each other and communication. We can get to the details later.
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Wake up early. Get Outside.
