WHAT DO YOU DO?
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (during the Lauren Conrad era) with the intention of making a career out of window displays and visual merchandising (only took one class in digital design!). At the time, I was obsessed with Macy’s holiday windows in New York and thought Bloomingdale’s in Santa Monica would be a great starting point, along with an apprenticeship at CM Squared Designs, a boutique window design firm in West Hollywood. However, I quickly learned that I wanted to utilize more of my skills on the job and not be pigeon holed. I secured a position as the Assistant Fashion Editor at ShoeDazzle - an amazing opportunity where I learned a great deal about the industry. They needed someone that was proficient in Photoshop in order to create day and night looks for each new monthly shoe collection. I knew I could do it, so I jumped at the chance and quickly learned new skills on the job by arriving two hours before everyone else and leaving late, in order to practice on Photoshop. Fast forward ten years, countless photoshoots, and hundreds of email campaigns later, and I can say without a doubt, that I am doing what I absolutely love.
How do you stand out in your field?
Confidence and the willingness to fail. In order to do what I love, I had to build my confidence and be okay with not being perfect. I’m extremely organized and can handle multiple projects at once, but even the most organized person can make mistakes. We’re only human! I offer my clients and collaborators the peace of mind that everything will get done and on time.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I have worked the corporate life for ten years, so being a freelancer is relatively new to me. Therefore, I’m working on building connections and collaborating with others in my field in order to continue improving my skills and establishing a successful business.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
My style is whimsical, charming, and loaded with GIFs. If I could turn everything I create into a GIF I would. My email marketing campaign designs would be the best representation of that.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
The majority of my background is based in digital and print design, so I would love to be able to work more on photoshoots, whether that be through art direction and/or coordination.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Getting organized and having a clear branded voice in order to get my freelance business going.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Oh my… all my endless errands and cleaning! It’s never ending and really sucks up some precious career building time.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
To not be sad and stressed about growing up during my senior year of high school. We don’t ever really grow up… not if we don’t want to. We can stay silly and carefree and playful. That’s how you stay creative, by bending the rules and societies predisposed conventions in order to create new and unexpected art.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
UX/UI design! I haven’t designed for web as much as I would like and know there is more to learn than what I find online on my own. One-on-one training would be far more beneficial.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Digital, print, and packaging design / window display creation / photoshoot production and coordination / art direction / retouching / marketing campaign strategy / social media content
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
Working with someone that loves what they do. If everyone on the project is passionate about their role, we’ll be able to produce an even better and more impactful product.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
Everyone’s budget and timeline is different, so I offer a couple of options for digital and print design projects, including those projects that are smaller and short term (i.e. photoshoots, retouching, etc.). You can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for further details. All projects require a 50% deposit in order to begin work and secure the project start date.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
Just shoot me an email at email@example.com with details on your project or creative needs.
