Alexandra McGinness
Q What do you do?
I help you create a visual identity that aligns completely with you on a deep, intuitive level that attracts just the right clients.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I learned to code on MySpace. Then, after college, I went on a long a windy road to find my purpose. I ended up going back to community college to get a certificate in Web Development and Design. After that, I freelanced on the side for several years. In 2019 I ended up getting laid off from my corporate job and decided in that moment to take my side gig full time. I now run The Arcoíris Design Co full time and have worked with over 20 branding and web design clients in 2021 alone.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
My approach to design is different than most of my peers. I use a combination of strategy and intuition to develop brands, websites and packaging that fully resonates with my clients and their target markets. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to design either. My goal is always to create unique solutions for my clients. That's why I design—websites specifically—on multiple platforms.
Q What are you working on right now?
I am in the process of building out Squarespace website templates based on the 12 zodiac signs.
Q What’s your style?
I like to say that my style shifts with each client I work with. I can create designs in a variety of different styles, but on a personal level resonate most with bold, colorful designs. I'll include a few examples of brands that really resonate with my style aesthetic.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
My favorite skill is web design, and I'd love to take on more web projects.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
I wish there were more hours in a day so I could get more done.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
All of my social media content creation.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I wish I could have told myself it's ok to change your mind about something. I decided to go to college for biology and stuck with it because I self-pressured myself into staying in that major. I didn't think any other major would be good enough. I knew while I was studying in that field that I wasn't going to continue in it once I was done with college. I really wish I had switched to computer science or at least had given myself the change to explore other majors. There's nothing wrong with changing your mind and moving on to something that brings you more joy!
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
SEO for sure because it couples super well with what I currently do as a web designer.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
Brand identity and design along with Squarespace or Shopify website projects.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
I would love to work with more clients from the food and beverage space. I am weirdly obsessed with the food industry and am overly knowledgeable about so many important topics in the space. I'd love to work with a vegan food company on branding or packaging, a grocery store or even a restaurant (once they're able to be back open again!)
Other than that, I'm open to working with all kinds of different clients. I'd love to take on more web design clients and use Squarespace to bring their visions to life.
Q: What is your rate?
You can find out all the details about my pricing on my website
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Please reach out to me about working together via my email.
When you email me make sure to send over the budget, scope, platform to build on (if you already know), location, and how you heard about me.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
I design digital art, cook and bake and play piano.
