Q What do you do?

I’m a Creative Director/Copywriter with a love for strategy, an eye for design, and over 7 years of experience writing and ideating across a wide range of industries (both in-house and at global agencies).

This means I do a lot of things: I develop creative campaigns for brands of all sizes. I ideate and script video content, then see it through by creative directing on set. I write copy for websites, social, emails, and more. I work with founders to develop unique brand tone and voice guides. And I lead teams and provide mentorship and guidance to creatives breaking out in the industry.

Additionally, I have been an illustrating and writing poetry since 2016, selling my work on Etsy. My extracurricular creative hobbies have taken many forms—including periodically refurbishing pieces from FaceBook Marketplace—but namely in 2020 I decided to teach myself type design. After a year of rejection, I finally got approved for a shop on Creative Market and have been designing new fonts ever since!

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

Well it all started with graduating college and thinking "WTF do I do now?!" After much contemplation and many rejections, one thing led to another and I found myself pursuing a copywriting degree from Chicago Portfolio School in order to break out in the creative advertising industry.
While in school, I started posting my ramblings and drawings on Instagram. My friends and family began commenting things like, "Can I buy this..?" I was like, okay sure - let me just figure that out real quick. So I opened an Etsy shop, and kept creating new work to post and sell.
Meanwhile, I started becoming curious about what it was like to be a copywriter and work somewhere other than an agency. During the beginning of the pandemic, I started a new role - this time working in-house. This was massively beneficial for my career, as I developed an entirely new set of skills. I was deep in tone and voice development, got a lot more experience with video content creation and production, and flexed my leadership muscles even more.
Around this time same, I found myself spending hours and hours each day learning how to design type, just for fun. I loved it. It combined math and art in a way I didn't know existed (freakin' love math, not sorry about it). This became a quick passion of mine and taught me to put the work in on projects that matter to me, and never give up when faced with a setback.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

Honestly, I just be myself. There are so many people with incredible talents, and I don't try to pretend I'm the best at anything. But I'm very good at a lot of things, and the rest I've proven to myself I can figure out along the way.
I stand out by being my honest, most authentic self at every phase of the journey. I am an extremely empathetic and deeply sensitive soul, so I choose to lead with compassion, joy, and humor.
You can't fight authenticity, so I use that as my super power.

Q What are you working on right now?

Actually I am in the process of launching a bespoke events company with a close friend/ colleague.
We both come from the creative side of advertising so we've been in the business of storytelling for decades. We decided to transfer our conceptual skills into something a bit more meaningful, so now we'll be bringing creative ideas to life in service of people, not things.
At Late Checkout Events, we craft, execute, and produce unique parties that bring people together through authenticity, individuality, and creativity. We can't wait to get started (okay, we already have - but we can't tell you about it just yet!).
We'll be officially launching by the end of 2022, so please get in touch (blythecgreen@gmail.com) if you'd like to chat and otherwise...stay tuned!

Q What’s your style?

This is a hard one to answer as I feel like my style changes and evolves overtime. If I had to sum it up, I'd say authentic. I love to be real. I love to call things out as they are. I love to make people think about things in a way they haven't yet.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

Type Design! I love the process of creating a font, but do not love the other side of the biz that is required to market and sell the fonts. I can see myself starting to outsource more of the things I don't love so I can spend more time on the things I do.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

As an I'll-Just-Figure-It-Out type person, one thing I struggle with is outsourcing. My life would be easier if I would just commit to hiring out the pieces of my business that are slowing me down.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

Create mockups. Help me ideate content for my social pages. Run my Pinterest ads. Help me stay organized juggling many different clients. The list goes on!

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

Vulnerability is the heart of creative work, and the more you hide yourself from your work, the harder it is for others to connect with it. I mean, I would tell myself that even now. It's a lesson we have to keep learning over and over again.

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

Hands down the legal side of running a business. Taxes, contracts, the whole shebang. It all overwhelms me to no end.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

Video content! I thrive while creative directing on set. It makes me feel like my most confident, powerful, boss-bitch self.

Also open to any other creative direction/copywriting roles - especially ones for new businesses looking for help developing their unique POV.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

In a perfect world, a client comes to me with a super clear vision of what they are looking for, but they're not super strict on how it needs to be done. I am an extremely strategic copywriter, which means you may ask me to write the copy for the homepage of your website, but I might also suggest changing the navigation menu to something a bit more user friendly. I love having the space to use my expertise to provide a strong creative POV, then we can have a conversation around if it's working for you or not and I'll adjust from there.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Email me at blythecgreen@gmail.com! I can also be reached through my website: blythegreen.com. Send me an intro and a picture of your favorite dog and I'll probably get back to you ASAP for more pup pics.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

An old coworker of mine is one of the most talented designers I've ever known. Check her work out! thenameissoa.com

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
