Q What do you do?

I make your designs, products, and fun punchlines move around the screen, and sometimes make the laser beams go pew-pew in feature films.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

I regretted my focus in Video in college and found passion next door in Motion Design. Worked my butt off for several years, and now I am still working my butt off. I try not to forget to go outside and play, though.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

I am kind, fast, efficient, and understand the steps needed to 'wow' the client based on their needs.

Q What are you working on right now?

A projection-mapping animation project to be displayed on the grounds of an art museum. Getting paid to make art is the best kind of work.

Q What’s your style?

I like the abstract, surreal, ambient, nature-oriented, calming, second-guessing kind of styles. My professional work is all over the place, but I am working on a personal ambient synth album combined with looping nature visuals as a very large personal project.. not ready to share that yet.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

I'd like to focus on being better at climbing mountains. Forget the work for a sec, go outside, walk up a giant hill, see the Earth beneath you and all that it has to offer.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

The most frustrating part of my business right now is the lack of education on the subject of motion design from the client side. I think I need to create some sort of one-page document (or short motion design piece!) about what it is that I actually do, what I can offer, and how long it actually takes, and why it takes that long. Clients want the thing tomorrow, but they can't have it tomorrow and they don't understand why.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

I would pay them more than $20 hour, then I would have them be my producer. Someone who can talk to the client for me, handle the emails, take the notes so that I can focus on the work itself.

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

Dear past me: Failure is the teacher. It's ok to F%*k up. It is an essential ingredient to your growth. Without failure, you can't actually grow at all.

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

I would like to sit down with a VFX Supervisor that worked on a largescale VFX-heavy film and just talk about everything regarding the how/why of it all.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

I am looking for more 3D realism projects (product renders, realistic product animations) and also some projects with VFX would be fun. It's been a little while on the latter.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

I really enjoyed my work on the various Marvel projects. My most recent favorite would be Loki Season Two where I got to work on a variety of different aspects of the season and incorporate all of my different skillsets to the mix (2D basic animation, 3D realism, Compositing, etc). Working with the studio Perception is always a dream. They're all so talented and with each project I usually learn so much that I can apply to other projects.

Q: What is your rate?

My rate is $850/day or $150/hour. This is roughly somewhere in the upper-middle range for someone at my level. As a perk, my price includes free opinions about why birds are awesome at no extra charge.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Visit my website at www.alextrimpe.com or email me directly at alextrimpe@gmail.com to inquire about any project ideas!

Q Who is a creative you admire?

Ash Thorp — He is the best of the best. Always at the top of the game. Always pushing forward. Always inspiring.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Go outside and hug the Earth.
