Hannah Tyler
Q What do you do?
“I’m a multidisciplinary artist, brand designer, and shopify developer specializing in visual storytelling that feels authentic and fresh.”
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
Lots of exploring and failing up. I studied visual communications in college, which essentially prepared me to be the renaissance woman I am today. I started my career as a wardrobe stylist, but found the pull of graphic design was too strong to keep me on set. That led me to fashion e-commerce, where I fell in love with Shopify and digital marketing.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I’m a storyteller above all else, and it’s that drive to share the worlds inside my head that informs everything I do. With over 10 years of experience in the fashion & retail industry, I understand the time and patience it takes to cultivate something great, and I have an eye for the nitty gritty details needed to elevate a brand.
Q What are you working on right now?
I’m proudly the E-Commerce Director for the fine jewelry brand Starling, which is my favorite work in progress. Outside of my 9-5, I’ve been working on a full brand refresh for a small business that is very dear to my heart. I can’t wait to be able to share the results soon!
Q What’s your style?
I believe that true style can’t be bought, and taste is something to be formed through experience. The books given as birthday presents, the shells found on vacations, the jewelry collected over a lifetime are what real tastemaking is made of. My personal taste can only be defined as sentimental and evolving - rooted in feeling, shaped by the past, and open to the unexpected.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I wish I could dive into brand design wholly for a while. It encompasses everything I enjoy doing - graphic designing, visual storytelling, copywriting, and web designing.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
Accidentally hitting “Open in Bridge” on Photoshop (iykyk).
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Right now what I need more than anything is someone who can help me go through my work archives and sort through what to upload to my site. I have years worth of projects and I get so overwhelmed with deciding what to share!
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I wish I could go back to my 22 year old self and tell her that she doesn’t need to have all the answers, and that it’s ok to not know everything. At 22 I somehow found myself as the E-commerce Director of a major fashion label and beat myself up constantly for not knowing how to manage it all.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
I’d love to learn more about what decisions are made in creating a legacy brand. I look at what Olympia Gayot has been doing at J. Crew in such awe! She’s taken what was becoming a dated, uninspired label to something that feels reimagined, exciting and long-lasting.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’d really love to work with clients that are either just starting out and need help bringing their vision to life, or existing brands that need some help elevating to fit with the ever-changing landscape of e-commerce.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
My dream client trusts my vision and process as much as I trust theirs. I love creative collaboration, and feel most fulfilled when I get to work with people who are passionate about what they do. If you believe there’s no such thing as a silly idea or a stupid question, let's work together!
Q: What is your rate?
My rate starts at $100/hr, depending on the scope of the project. I also offer sliding-scale rates for non-profits or businesses focused on environmental and social impact!
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
If you’re interested in working together or have questions about my offerings, please email me at hannah@geniusatlarge.com
Q Who is a creative you admire?
My best friend is an extremely talented (and fun to work with) art director based in Los Angeles. You can find her on instagram at @tinyroastedonion or online at www.katelyngardnerkelley.com.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Morning pages, neighborhood walks, and laughing with my friends help me find my flow state again and again :)
