Q What do you do?

I connect brands to real people by telling authentic stories. I write across various mediums about culture, the human experience and more. No matter short form, long form, articles, EDMs, socials or website copy, I got you.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

I started my nursing career in 2020. I learned quickly that I needed a creative outlet for my brain juices. I wrote as a hobby and came across the ilovecreatives Creative Copywriting Course and fell in love.

I landed a job a few months later as a writer and strategist at INFIX Studio – a storytelling based creative digital studio. I’m still there and learning every day.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

Coming from a nursing and mental health background, I approach creative projects from a different lens. Connecting to humans on the ground helps me connect with them on paper.

Q What are you working on right now?

INFIX Studio just made a stunning brand for Seconds Market – a secondhand fashion market where you can sell your closet directly to people without a middleman. Think Depop IRL. I had the honour of doing the copy.

I also worked with my INFIX team to start our spotlight articles, where we chat to people, brands, spaces and places we admire. Anyone from femtech health startups to our local pizzeria. We dream up some visuals to go with. It’s super fun and we even got some leads from it. Win. and win.

Q What’s your style?

Human existence, joy, and suffering inspire me to be a storyteller. I love to write as if I’m walking society in front of a mirror.

I’m a sharp shooter and don’t like beating around the bush. Is that style? I think so.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

I’d love to learn some design skills. There’s something enticing about creating a project with full creative direction with graphics and copy.

Also I’m starting a substack, Hot Milk, which I’d love to pour more love into. I want to peel back the layers of today to offer a perspective on the lives of people navigating our complex world. Hot Milk’s substack will cover anything from global crises, the leading scorer in last night’s game, to why Americans need to get out more.

I want readers to sit back and enjoy their hot milk. Sounds sexy but kind of weird? That’s hot milk. Watch this space.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

The best thing about starting my career as a nurse is that not many things frustrate me. I’m always bootstrapped and ready to pivot.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

I’d pay someone to drag me to the gym and keep me on schedule. As much as I go with the flow, I thrive on structure.

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

I wish I could have told myself at 18 that no one knows what they’re doing and that’s okay. My student debt reminds me of this every day. (Love you, girl)

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

I’d love to talk to Ocean Vuong on his writing process and how he broke the mold in fiction writing. He writes with no bounds or structures and it's inspiring.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

Copywriting, no matter the scope. Brand strategy. Article writing. I’m ready to morph and write.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

I’ve loved Nike ads since I was little. I was a college athlete and our school was sponsored by Nike. We even got to give feedback on gear while it was in the testing phase. Working with them would feel like a full circle moment. Let’s manifest that together.

I’m also passionate about health and wellness brands where I can flex my nursing background, fashion, women-centric brands and hospitality.

Q: What is your rate?

Depending on the project, I do an hourly rate or an entire project rate. I work on a sliding scale, depending on the nature of the business. For example, exciting startups and nonprofits vs. bigger corporations.

I love to talk and pricing is always a discussion, not an end point.

My hourly rate starts at $50.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Email me with your ideas at julia_cubbedge@yahoo.com.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

The studio I work for, INFIX Studio @infix_studio does great work and my boss, Niamh Sullivan, is a genius.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Reading books, touching grass and drinks with friends.
