Kaitlyn Labow
Q What do you do?
“I am a freelance designer who designs mobile apps, web apps, and websites—translating complex, fuzzy ideas into intuitive, user-friendly experiences. I support clients with strategic thinking, UX best practices, and agile workflows. Though it’s not my main focus I do also help clients with marketing materials and graphic design elements when needed.”
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I studied graphic design at University and interned at a digital agency during the summers, which introduced me to the world of web design. Starting my career as a web designer led me to a UI role at a meditation tech company, where I grew into a product designer and later moved on to work with other startups. For about the last two years I’ve been freelancing, working with startups, large size companies, and agencies to help define their products, design strategies, and user experiences.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I bring a strategic lens to design, balancing user needs, business goals, and visual clarity. My experience conducting user research and collaborating closely with UX Research teams has given me a deep understanding of how to connect with users, gather meaningful feedback, and translate insights into thoughtful design decisions. I help clients shape their product vision, refine their messaging, and design experiences that actually convert. I also make the process collaborative and fun—clients often say they feel both excited and understood when they work with me.
Q What are you working on right now?
I’m currently building my own swimwear brand while freelancing for clients in need of web design & product design help.
Q What’s your style?
My style is fun, playful, and quirky, though I’d say that I’m very adaptable to my clients. I am always looking for ways to bring more joy to the user experience. I would say this is best exemplified in my personal portfolio site. For clients I think it’s important to push the envelope a bit then reel things back when necessary. My personal perspective is we could all use more play in our lives, it doesn't always need to be so serious.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
Lately I've been working with larger companies but would love to focus back on startups. Especially startups in the health & wellness industry. I always find that there is so much excitement, ambition, creativity, and variety here. There’s also something special about helping build products that support people’s well-being.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
Feeling like I am constantly updating my portfolio and LinkedIn to connect with more clients! Why can’t we find each other telepathically by now?!
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
I would love to hire someone to do client outreach and help with content creation on social media.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I would go back to my graduation year and tell myself that my unique perspective is what sets me apart from the crowd. It’s a strength, not a weakness. I would tell her to cast a wider net and send out my resume and portfolio to companies I didn’t think I had the skill to work for.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
I’d love to talk to an expert in consulting. I have a strong eye for how teams can improve their processes, communication, and product design workflows, especially within agile environments. I’d love to learn how to turn that skill into a more structured consulting offering.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’m looking for part-time contracts with companies of any size looking for UX or Product Design support. I’m especially drawn to teams that value thoughtful design and clear communication.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
My ideal client/job values doing things right, not just fast and cheap. They care deeply about their users and customers, and want to understand them in a meaningful way. This client/workplace welcomes different perspectives, respects everyone's ideas, and makes the process enjoyable along the way.
Q: What is your rate?
For short to long term engagements my rate ranges from $90-$125, depending on the complexity of the project, and the client’s budget. I do my best to be flexible. Websites can range from $5000 to $20,000+ depending on how comprehensive and large the website needs to be. Typically big clients desire deeper exploration and more complex and custom work and solopreneurs and small businesses need less customization.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
My preferred method of contact are smoke signals and pigeon carriers, but if all else fails I can be reached by email kaitlyn.labow@gmail.com or on LinkedIn. Letting me know about your goals, needs, and timelines will help me get the process rolling more quickly.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
By exploring other mediums and constantly taking in new surroundings.
