Karen Boyer
Q What do you do?
“I’m a creative director and designer who helps brands find clarity and express it visually.”
I work with clients to define their point of view, refine their story, and build cohesive brand systems that show up consistently across websites, marketing, and content. My role sits at the intersection of strategy and design, translating ideas, emotions, and goals into visuals that feel intentional, elevated, and human.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I’ve spent over 13 years working across design, branding, and marketing, learning by doing. I built my career through hands on experience, long term client relationships, and a willingness to evolve as my taste and perspective sharpened. Freelancing allowed me to refine my voice, choose projects that aligned with my values, and move toward more design led, strategy driven work. Over time, I’ve learned how to balance intuition with structure, creativity with business, and aesthetics with function.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I bridge strategy and aesthetics. I’m not just making things look good, I’m thinking about how design functions in the real world, how it supports a business goal, and how it feels to the end user. Clients often tell me I’m good at translating vague ideas into something clear, confident, and elevated. I’m also very hands on, collaborative, and thoughtful about process.
Q What are you working on right now?
Currently, I’m working across branding, website design, and ongoing creative retainers for interior designers, real estate professionals, and lifestyle brands. I’m also refining a more standardized scope of work for luxury focused clients, and selectively taking on projects that allow for deeper creative direction rather than one off deliverables.
Q What’s your style?
My work is rooted in restraint, clarity, and intention. I’m drawn to designs that feel architectural and editorial, where every element has a purpose and nothing is overworked. I value strong typography, thoughtful pacing, and systems that can evolve over time. My perspective is that good design should feel obvious in hindsight, like it couldn’t have been done any other way. I’m continuing to push toward projects that feel even more refined, expressive, and experience driven.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
Creative direction. I’m at my best when I’m shaping the big picture, setting a visual and strategic north star, and guiding work across multiple touchpoints rather than executing in isolation.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
The constant pull between creative work and operational tasks. While both are necessary, switching between them can interrupt creative flow. The work that tends to fall to the bottom of the list is system building, documentation, and process refinement, even though I know those are the very things that will create more space for deeper, more impactful creative work.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Admin support, file organization, invoicing follow ups, and helping prep assets or presentations or capabilities decks so I can stay focused on creative thinking.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I wish I had told myself that there’s a balance between taking on work to grow and reinvest in the business, and being selective to protect your time and taste. Early on, some of the “yes” projects were necessary, they built momentum, stability, and opportunity. The key insight came later, learning when growth through volume stops serving you, and when it’s time to be more intentional about what you take on and why.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
Building a creative business that scales without sacrificing depth. Specifically, how to grow a studio or practice in a way that protects creative quality, supports long term collaborators, and leaves room for rest and curiosity.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’m looking for brand identity, website, and creative direction projects with design led businesses that value thoughtfulness and collaboration. I’m especially interested in longer term relationships where I can help shape not just individual deliverables, but the overall visual and strategic direction over time.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
An ideal client trusts the process, values design as a strategic tool, and is open to collaboration. Some of my best experiences have been with clients who come in with a vision but allow space for refinement and creative leadership.
Q: What is your rate?
Branding projects typically start around $6,000 depending on scope and can scale up to $30,000 for more comprehensive engagements. Website projects generally begin between $4,000–$6,000, with pricing increasing based on size, complexity, and custom functionality. I also offer monthly retainers for ongoing creative direction, marketing, and social content creation. I’m always open to discussing flexible structures when the fit is right.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Email is best. I appreciate intros that include a brief overview of the project, timeline, and budget range, but none of that is required. What matters most to me is understanding your vision, your goals, and how committed you are to bringing them to life. Bonus points for clarity, curiosity, and good energy.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Quiet mornings first. Strong ideas need room to breathe. Clarity creates.
