Q What do you do?
Dream up cool ideas and bring them to life in photoshoots and post-production campaigns.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I'm completely self-taught—I didn’t go to college for art or design. After graduating, I hustled into internships and junior roles, soaking up everything I could from the incredible designers and art directors who mentored me. I learned a ton on the job and complemented that with courses in motion graphics, retouching, and graphic design fundamentals. Over time, I evolved from taking direction to becoming the one who sets it. But I believe you’re never too experienced to keep learning, and I bring that mindset to every project and role.
Now, I get to be the mentor, guiding junior designers and helping them level up their skill sets. It’s incredibly rewarding to give back!
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I approach design with a playful and fun-loving attitude. Being self-taught, work feels more like an adventure than a chore—I bring curiosity and excitement to every project. I bring a sense of levity to what I do, but I'm also able to stay grounded. I approach my work with humility, leaving my ego at the door and keeping my personal feelings separate from the creative process.
Q What are you working on right now?
Building a client basis for freelance work while I try to find my next full-time role!
Q What’s your style?
Referential, editorial, yet silly. I love making things that people find funny or want to look at.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
Since I spend a lot of time in the digital art direction realm, I would love to get onto photoshoot sets and see where the magic happens.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
I'm seeing more and more job postings that ask for designers to be experts in multiple areas outside of what they are trained in—a designer isn't a copywriter or social media manager. There's an expectation for everyone to be generalists instead of focusing on a few specific areas and I think this does a disservice to our industry!
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Clean my apartment.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I would tell 2018 me not to worry so much about being a graphic designer and to trust the universe a little bit more! It'll happen, babe.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
How to be more flexible when working with founders and leaders who are data-driven, ROI-focused, and don't care about aesthetics.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I would love to work on branding/art direction for eCommerce businesses. I'm available for short-term or long-term projects!
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
Someone who is bought in and trusts who they have hired to represent their vision and bring it to life.
Q What is your rate?
$50/hr. Flexible scale for project-based work.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Email me @ rberdann@gmail.com with your budget, scope, and favorite animal (that one is important).
Q Who is a creative you admire?
Anyone who has been able to create their design practice from scratch and turn it into a lucrative business—it's not easy to go out on your own!
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Knowing when to put the computer down. Going to museums when possible. Flipping through books and magazines. Sometimes being offline is when the best ideas emerge!
