Amant is a dynamic non-profit arts organization founded in 2019 that fosters artistic research, experimentation, and dialogue through exhibitions, live programs, publications, and artist residencies. Operating across two locations in Brooklyn, NY, and Chiusure, Siena (Italy), Amant advances the presentation of contemporary art with an emphasis on innovative formats and ideas. Our 21,000-square-foot Brooklyn campus features exhibition spaces, a multipurpose screening and performance venue, café, and bookshop, serving as a hub for interdisciplinary artistic exchange.
Position Overview
The Senior Design and Communications Manager will lead Amant's comprehensive visual design and communications strategy, as well as be directly involved with overseeing the organization's robust publications program. This role combines strategic leadership with hands-on creative direction, ensuring that all visual materials reflect Amant's commitment to artistic excellence and innovation. The Senior Design and Communications Manager will manage both internal design operations and external publishing partnerships while developing new initiatives that expand Amant's reach and impact in the contemporary art world. The Senior Design and Communications Manager works as a liaison between all departments of the organization and reports to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
Visual Identity and Brand Management
Maintain and evolve Amant's visual identity across all platforms and materials
Ensure brand consistency across exhibitions, programs, digital platforms, and publications
Create design standards and guidelines for internal and external use
Oversee exhibition graphics, signage, wayfinding, and environmental graphics for Amant’s Brooklyn Campus
File and preserve records of printed materials and Amant-related press
Creative Direction and Design
Lead design for all marketing materials, exhibition graphics, program announcements, and digital content
Direct photography and videography projects for documentation and promotional purposes
Collaborate with external designers, photographers, and production vendors
Design and produce materials for special events, fundraising initiatives, and institutional partnerships
Digital and Web Presence
Oversee website design updates and user experience improvements
Source assets in collaboration with curatorial team and coordinate with external producers and editor(s), direct and ensure timely delivery of edited media (video and audio) for the Amant website and social media
Together with curatorial team, and social media coordinator, develop social media calendar and contribute with drafts/ creative concepts for social media and online content
Manage digital publication formats and online reading experiences
Ensure accessibility and mobile optimization across all digital platforms
Publications Leadership
In close dialogue with the curatorial team, develop and execute Amant's publications strategy, including exhibition catalogues, books, and digital publications and other experimental text-based formats.
In close dialogue with the curatorial team, oversee the complete publication lifecycle from concept development through distribution.
Commission and collaborate with artists, curators, writers, critics, and scholars to produce compelling content
Manage publication budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships
Coordinate with curators, artists, and external partners on publication content design and timelines.
Develop innovative publishing formats that align with Amant's experimental mission
Outreach
Maintain contact base in Artlogic and Mailchimp
Plan, develop and implement direct outreach campaigns for public programs and exhibitions, in coordination with Curatorial Department
Team Management and Development
Lead and mentor social media coordinator
Collaborate closely with curatorial and operations departments
Manage external creative partners
Foster professional development and creative growth within the team
Strategic Planning and Innovation
Contribute to institutional strategic planning and long-term vision
Identify new opportunities for publication distribution and audience development
Stay current with industry trends in art publishing and design
Represent Amant at professional conferences, book fairs, and industry events
Qualifications
Required
Master's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Art History, or related field
5+ years of experience in design and publications, preferably in contemporary art or cultural institutions
Proven track record of managing complex publication projects from concept to completion
Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and web design tools including Figma
Strong understanding of print production, typography, and color management
Experience managing budgets, timelines, and vendor relationships
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of contemporary art trends, criticism, and publishing landscape
Preferred
The Ideal Candidate is/has:
Previous experience at a museum, gallery, or arts organization
Passionate about design and communication in the cultural sector, has a desire to grow in this field and to further help grow Amant’s voice and image through appealing concepts that reflect Amant’s brand identity and mission.
A proven ability to make brand-specific graphic design assets and works proficiently with InDesign; experience with Premier, the Adobe Suite and After Effects, as well as captioning and transcription software are strongly recommended.
A strong visual sense, can work editorially with images (sequencing, layout, color, text-image relations).
Familiar with communication strategy in small to mid-sized cultural or arts organizations, has at least 3 years of experience working in digital media or communications.
An excellent project manager and coordinator, both internally and with external parties.
A good team communicator and is willing to work collaboratively
Flexible, knows how to prioritize, and can attend to tasks in a timely manner.
Keeps colleagues abreast of process and projects.
Experience with international publishing and distribution channels
Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and emerging media formats
Knowledge of Italian language (given Amant's Siena location)
Understanding of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices
