Q What do you do?

I’m an interdisciplinary artist and creative web designer crafting engaging, playful, experimental (yet accessible) digital experiences.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

My unconventional education/creative background (was quasi-homeschooled in esoteric University subjects as a child, then continued my studies at Interlochen Arts Academy and Manhattan School of Music) and urge to push artistic boundaries have informed my current web design style and practice.

I first started making websites as an 11 year old, and through launching a small business (a music teaching studio) in my early 20's, really learned the importance of brand identity and truly representing that brand through an engaging, elevated website. From there, I took ilovecreatives Squarespace Design Course, honed my skills and discovered my design style, and started working with clients. I recently finished another intensive creative coding course through School for Poetic Computation and am excited to experiment with all I’ve learned. As a freelance web designer, I've made several websites (including experimental Virtual Reality websites, and Squarespace websites for a coffee technology startup, a sociology PhD research project, authors and musicians). I am also fluent in CSS, Javascript, and HTML, and love constantly pushing my creative boundaries.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

By being a thoughtful listener and collaborator with a light-hearted nature and a strong imagination.

Q What are you working on right now?

Early stages of branding and website for a new jazz-guitar-tutorial monthly subscription service!

Q What’s your style?

Playful, intriguing, elegant. I love interactive elements and whimsical details.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

Sometimes I wish I could get back to my music conservatory roots of practicing several hours of Classical piano and violin every day! Within the creative coding realm, I’d love to devote hours to playing around with three.js and Max/MSP.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

Hmm, self-promotion has always been tough for me! Establishing a social media strategy and a regular posting schedule has always been a challenge.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

Social media outreach…accounting...and teaching me daily personalized choreography routines (love a little mid-day dance, why not)

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

I probably would have gone back several years and let myself know that coding is actually so much fun and very accessible and not some abstract dry mathematical thing to be scared of! I’d had no introduction to the realm of creative coding, and had no idea it was actually so exciting and full of artistic potential.

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

Fractals...in all ways--within philosophy and conceptually, within nature, art, and technology, etc.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

I have a penchant for creating musician/performing arts websites due to my background and immediate community, but I’m keen to expand into all realms! I grew up with traditional Chinese medicine, herbalism and foraging, and I’ve recently been dreaming up an interactive plant/fungi oriented website. Herbalists hmu! On the flipside of career paths…perhaps unsurprisingly, quite a few of my musician friends have pivoted to a career in law, and I’m definitely down to craft some sleek, professional websites as well.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

I would love more opportunities to collaborate with fellow QTBIPOC, social justice and sustainability oriented individuals and businesses, and creatives of all sorts.

Q: What is your rate?

Custom Squarespace websites typically start at $2000, and pricing depends on the complexity of the project. Depending on your circumstances, I’m also open to working on a sliding scale to keep my services accessible!

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

You can shoot me an email at adriannasvitak@gmail.com with any inquiries, or fill out my intake form https://www.adriannasvitak.com/web-design-form.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

I recently connected with Della Mueller in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia) and they were so kind and generous with their coding and freelancing knowledge and advice. Love their bold and colorful design style!

Speaking of fellow Squarespace Design Course graduates, I also hugely admire Hello-World’s work just…geez, so good, their design is so inspiring to me. Halim Lee recently blew my mind with her final project in “the Musical Web” course through SFPC, such a web wizard.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Keeping alive a childlike sense of wonder…and a reverence for nature <3
