WHAT DO YOU DO?

I’m a multidisciplinary graphic designer based in Los Angeles, collaborating with clients to build thoughtful and sincere identities and visual experiences.

My practice also includes photography, mostly on film.

WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

I started out my career in design not knowing just how much was out there. By saying yes to different opportunities, I was able to learn more about specific industries and disciplines, from fashion to digital to advertising. The initial openness has helped me to uncover interests that have developed into my current practice, and I continue to take steps forward by making an effort to always be learning something new.

How do you stand out in your field?

This isn’t a particular goal of mine, but as an Asian American who comes from a family of immigrants I’m constantly thinking about the marginalized and underrepresented when I approach my work, especially given the current climate in America. I actively seek collaboration with organizations, people, and initiatives that share the same cultural motivations.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

I just wrapped up some album artwork for a Korean indie band. I’m also working on writing and designing an art book with my college roommates, focused on the idea of women in public spaces.

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?

I'm still trying to understand what my style is myself, and admit that I may not make that revelation anytime soon.

The discoveries I have made about my taste and perspective so far have come largely from collaborating with people and clients who take me out of my comfort zone.

I don't want to limit myself to a constrained point of view or style so I do my best to listen to the project needs, using this to inform my visual approach.

WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?

Typography is one of those subjects that I feel like I could spend an entire lifetime learning.

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?

Being unable to spend time with my loved ones without fearing for their/my health and safety.

A very valid fear that is necessary to beat this pandemic. We do what we must. Wear a mask, wash your hands, be a good human!

IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?

Someone to help me with pitching and admin. And also to remind me to take a break and walk outside every now and then.

LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?

A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined myself being a freelancer. I wish I could have told myself that without risk there is no reward, and to not be afraid to take calculated jumps.

That said, I think all growth comes at the right timing and think that I needed to face the challenges I did in order to fully comprehend this.

IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?

This sounds incredibly un-exciting, but I wish I could learn how to navigate taxes/investments from an expert! Definitely not my world, and sometimes it makes my head spin.

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

I’m available for freelance graphic design opportunities for projects including branding, packaging, publication design, album / merch artwork, and digital design. My skill set is multidisciplinary, so even if your project isn’t on the above list I’d still love to hear from you!

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.

I love collaborating with businesses, artists, and initiatives that are culturally motivated, conscious-minded, and have clear visions.

HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?

You can send me an email at hello@arimhan.info with some information about your project (what the deliverables are, timeline and budget if determined) and we can set up a time to talk. Looking forward to hearing from you!

HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?

Getting outside and breathing some fresh air. Never fails!
