Asia Reekie
Q What do you do?
“I design and build elevated, high-performing websites for creatives, studios, independent brands, retail and hospitality businesses.”
My work spans premium Shopify, Squarespace and Webflow sites, as well as fully custom-coded digital flagships.
My work is about creating websites that feel true to the brand, connect with the right audience and can grow sustainably with the business. Whether you’re starting from scratch or refining an existing online presence, I help bring your brand to life online with considered design, custom development and a clear sense of purpose.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I have taken a pretty winding route to this career. Like lots of people, I have always had an interest in design, from interiors and fashion to architecture, but this really became a passion of mine from 2018, when I wanted to start my own swimwear business.
I worked abroad for a couple of years in the diving/hospitality industry, culminating in running a dive centre for an NGO and resort on a beautiful private island in Malaysia. I had recently decided to start my own swimwear brand when, cue Covid.
I was living at home during this time when my sister (who is a fantastic artist, check her out @florencereekie) needed to update her portfolio on Squarespace. I had some experience with the platform, so I offered to help. I was also learning Shopify development as I wanted to build my own brand from the ground up myself. That project, alongside learning Shopify for my own brand, sparked a long-term obsession with code and website design.
My sister has now well outgrown that original portfolio, and after selling out the stock from my swimwear business, I realised that what I had enjoyed most was the design and development behind the brand. That realisation led to ASJE Studio: a web design and development studio helping brands and businesses create considered, high-performing websites that feel true to who they are.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I stand out through a mix of design sensitivity, technical tenacity and genuine investment in the people I work with.
Whether I’m designing a bespoke Figma layout, developing a custom Shopify animation or troubleshooting the smallest detail, I’m meticulous about getting the right outcome. Some might call it obsession; I think of it as a healthy outlet for learning.
I also tailor my role to each project. Some clients need a creative partner to shape the website from the ground up. Others need a developer to bring an existing design to life. Either way, I genuinely care about the vision, the growth and the journey behind the work.
Q What are you working on right now?
I feel really lucky to be working on a custom Shopify website for a London-based fashion brand that I really admire, and also a few websites for amazingly talented creatives who I love working with.
Q What’s your style?
My style leans towards an editorial aesthetic, with a strong focus on typography and grid-based layouts. I love websites like Kinfolk, where the design feels calm and considered, but still full of character.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I’d love to do more of the brand-led side of my work. I really enjoy helping founders translate the feeling of their business into an online space, especially in retail and hospitality where atmosphere, detail and experience matter so much.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
I find balancing social media and marketing with client work really difficult. I know I need to be more consistent with it, but I’ll always prioritise the work I’m doing for clients, so it has naturally taken a back seat.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Definitely marketing and social media. I’d love someone to help me stay more consistent with that side of things.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
To be a total cliché and reference Coco Chanel, I think editing is crucial. That doesn’t necessarily mean giving every website a black-and-white editorial look; it means knowing what to refine, what to remove and how to build an aesthetic with intention.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
I think speaking to architects is always really enlightening. Often, I’ve walked past a building for years without thinking too much about it, then been told one specific detail that would normally go unnoticed, and it completely changes the way I look at it.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I’d love to work with more founders, creatives and independent brands who are ready to build a more considered online presence, especially in retail, fashion, interiors, hospitality and lifestyle. I’m drawn to projects where the website needs to feel like a true digital storefront or flagship for the brand.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
I've been really lucky to work with amazing clients who are so kind and a pleasure to work with, so I hope to continue that!
Q What is your rate?
My rate varies depending on the scope of the project, so it’s best to email me at hello@asjestudio.com for a tailored quote.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
To talk about a project, you can email me at hello@asjestudio.com, visit asjestudio.com to see some of my work, or DM me on Instagram at @asje_studio if that’s your preferred way to get in touch.
Q Who is a creative that you would recommend? Tell us why!
Olive Reekie — super talented Illustrator.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
I stay creative by continuing to educate myself on design in any capacity. Sometimes that’s rifling through the pages of a design magazine; other times, it’s replays of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
