Becca McFarlane / Minifists
Q What do you do?
“I’m an illustrator and creative director based out of Montreal, but I work globally thanks to the world wide web.”
I work a lot in cultural industries and with lifestyle brands. I used to design a lot of music merchandise and album artwork, it was a dream. I still try to collaborate with other artists as much as I can but I've since branched out.
I used the name Minifists, for my illustration work. With my illustration I try to hone in on my weirdo sensibilities. My work is not subtle and my characters can feel a bit absurd, but I love it.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
After completing my fine arts degree I was a bit aimless and running around in the city. I started out in music and live production before going back to school for illustration and design.
When I was building my portfolio those friends and colleagues from my touring days were some of my first clients. From there, I built my career across brand, packaging, and campaign work and eventual moved into creative direction.
Alongside that, I kept developing my illustration practice, taking on freelance projects, and getting to know myself as an artist to slowly build Minifists into what it is now.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
Visually, I'm known for being bold with my palette and illustration style. I favour a bold palette and clever design. I'm not afraid to push the boundaries and go out on a limb for something more conceptual.
As a Director, I care a lot. I care not only about the project and ensuring it's an authentic representation of the client, but I also care a lot about the people I work with. I always look for opportunities to elevate and champion my fellow collaborators. If we don't look out for each other, then who will?
Q What are you working on right now?
I have a packaging project keeping me busy at the moment. I’m collaborating with an activewear brand on an illustration-forward project that spans product, packaging, and campaign.
Q What’s your style?
My style leans bold, expressive, and a bit offbeat. I’m drawn to strong colour, editorialized design and work that feels like it has personality.
I think my illustration work is a fun and potentially unsettling view into my psyche. I like being stupid with concepts and bold graphic designs.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
