Evan Goodchild
WHAT DO YOU DO?
I specialize in all aspects of podcast production (editing, mixing, mastering, as well as sound design, original music, and voiceover work). I also specialize in video editing and documentary/digital story production. Also-also, I specialize in making original hip-hop influenced music.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I stuck with my passion for audio art-making and fused it with my people skills in the caring industry. Around twelve years ago, I ran a hip hop production workshop in drop-in centers funded by mental health agencies. That multiplied into being lead rapper in a gigging band with adults with disabilities and creating an award-winning documentary about the virtues of non-compliance with a radical mental health organization. The work sort of blossomed out from there: podcast editing, videography for non-profits, music production, teaching digital storytelling at both a college and elementary school age, etc. I strive for a decent balance of collaborating with people and digging into my production craft.
How do you stand out in your field?
I put my heart in the art. I have a deep appreciation for its transformative properties, so I respect the process and push for the breakthroughs in myself and others.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
Always working on editing, mixing and mastering a couple episodes of the ever-informative "Well Made" podcast by Lumi each week.
There’s some freelance video editing work for non-profits.
I have been steadily chipping away on a full length hip hop album called "Highlights" where I'm tackling the majority of the rapping, music and video production, as well as mixing it. It is a ton of work, and I'm loving it.
Oh, and I’m learning to animate which is blowing my mind wide open frame by frame.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
R.A.P Ferreira meets Mister Rogers meets Radiolab! Naw, the “hitRECord on your Radio” series I co-produced with Katelan Cunningham and a community of artists gives a good look into my ears.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
My video editing and animation are both disciplines that I’d love to dig into more to really crack ‘em wide open. I try not to wish too much though, and am just pursuing the reality. :)
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
My brother never seems to warn me when I’m on speakerphone.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
There are a lot of tedious, time-intensive tasks in preparing edits: cleaning up audio/video, organizing files, compressing, etc. It would certainly make life a lot easier to have someone tackle those tasks for me.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I want to tell nine year old me to join band. Learn an instrument and learn how to read/write music. I’d let him know that he is worthy of playing with the other kids and there’s nothing stopping him. It will pay off later, trust me, kid!
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
It would probably be with someone who has done a lot of work in developing a meaningful and spiritual life. I’d just want to spend time with them and see if they might slip me the answer...Everything else seems to be available for free on YouTube.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Assisting more people in strengthening their podcast productions is high on the list. There are so many great ideas and voices that just need that extra polish to get the signal clear and properly amplified, and I love being able to provide such a service.
More video editing opportunities are something I am also currently seeking.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
Trust, hard work, and fairness are all very important to me. The sooner we can get to ticking off all those boxes, the smoother the sailing for all onboard.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
Generally, I charge $35/hour for project-based work. I always reserve the right to be flexible however. Each project is a bit different, let's talk.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
I’d love it if you introduced yourself and we could talk via email at ebgoodchild@gmail.com And of course, a GIF that best represents the you of that moment would be extraordinary
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Disrupt routines, confront fear, exercise, smile
