WHAT DO YOU DO?
I help brands increase their bottom line by managing their digital marketing plans from analytics and strategy development straight through to creative content creation and effective execution.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
Let me tell you, I have been up, down and sideways on the staircase of life to get here! I initially graduated school with a degree in Accounting (and English Literature, go figure), where I jumped right into the corporate finance world, working for law and venture capital firms. There is no denying that my free time was always spent sketching, collaging, taking photos, and reading. After a few years of coming to terms with the fact that I was unhappy in my current career trajectory, I decided to enroll back into school at Parsons School of Design for Fashion Marketing. It was so refreshing to learn about the things that I really enjoyed: color theory, branding, Adobe Suite and drawing. Albeit still working full-time in legal finance, I started to blog, network, pick up part-time work and just about anything else to get more experience and exposure. It seems like a whirlwind, and it was, but an exciting one that has lead me here, to being a freelance digital marketer and strategist for creative brands.
How you Stand out in your field?
I find that it is difficult for others to cultivate the necessary right and left brain skills to be the most strategic businessperson for themselves or their business. There are brilliant individuals who can create to most beautiful work, but have a serious fear of structure and numbers, and vice versa. And let’s be honest, what good is a jaw-dropping photo or insightful analytical report if it isn’t used as effectively as possible to benefit your brand?! It’s a creative science, as I like to call it… and that’s why it’s so exciting for me! I'm able to use all of the facets of my unconventional background in numbers, planning, design and marketing.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I currently am working on growing my client base by networking in the form the social media relationships and in-person events. As a freelancer, my connections are a huge component of my work, so I’m concentrating on building strong relationships with the types of people and businesses that I’d love to work with. Client-wise, I just took on a full-service client, where I’m working on everything from analytics to social media management and content creation…so that keeps me on my toes!
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I will always describe my style as minimal and clean. I am a huge advocate for ‘less is more’ because it gives the adequate space for an individual or brand to shine through. There is a comfortability that your market can develop with a you when there are less distractions. Simple, but packs a punch, if you know what I mean! Aesthetically, I am constantly inspired by The Portland Studio, and Gemary.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
I wish I could focus more on creative development. My work and natural tendencies are always rooted in reasonability and ‘what makes sense’, so I often desire the ability to spend time thinking more abstractly.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Hmm.. I often find that I’m pushing myself for more output than ever. Are my clients getting their reports, posts and other deliverables as soon as possible? I often feel the pressure to ‘show something’ for my time, but I’m learning that it’s extremely important to make time for professional development in the form the research, inspiration and reseting.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
How nice would that be?! Honestly, I think I’d benefit most from someone helping me in reviewing and editing my work! As a one woman show, who is also a perfectionist, I sometimes get caught up looking at the details and triple checking my end product. (Not a bad habit, I suppose.) A fresh set of eyes often sees that glaring error or small tweak that you’re been staring at all along…and that would allow me to step away from the pressure to get everything exactly right, especially when I’m obsessing!
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I would have told 18 year old me that the traditional model of success does not have to be your model of success. Sometimes I used to put tasks, projects or goals on the back-burner because I didn’t feel like it would get me to an office job with the security I thought I needed to be happy. It took until post-college to really start putting my time and energy into things that were going to get me to where I really wanted to be in life— like going back to school at the age of 24 and leaving my corporate job at 26.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
I would love to talk to a successful self-employed individual on their experience in ‘balancing it all’. Doing everything from project management to accounting and prospecting for yourself can often seem daunting! Although there is no set path in this life, I think hearing experiences of others and their particular model of success helps me find what works best for me, too!
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I am looking to work with brands that may need assistance in the ‘full-service’ aspect of my offerings. It allows me to understand their brand deeply and also have a strong handle on all of their marketing efforts.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
My ideal client is one that I share similar values with. I consider myself a conscious consumer, meaning I prefer to shop local and always try to support brands that consider ethics and sustainability in their business model, so ideally my clients fall into that realm. I also hope that I can enter into a mutually engaging creative relationship with my clients; the end product is exponentially better when ideas and inspiration can flow easily between us and there is no barrier in the line of communication.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
My rate is always project-based, but I would say the average is about $40/hour. I also offer projects such as social media management for a monthly retainer fee of $350, just to name an example.
