Q What do you do?

I enjoy translating ideas into digital experiences through design and development, helping brands express their vision in a clear and meaningful way.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

During covid quarantine, one of Puno’s videos came up on my feed and I went down a rabbit hole which eventually led me to enrolling in the Squarespace Design Course. I honestly hadn’t felt that level of excitement or connection to a skill before and it completely shifted the direction of my career. That initial curiosity led me to continue learning through additional courses to expand my creative range and deepen my understanding of design. The perspectives I gained – along with the communities I became part of – had a lasting impact on how I approach my work today. Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with a range of studio owners and creative teams, which has further shaped my practice and perspective.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

Strong communication, clarity in the brief and thoughtful execution.

Q What are you working on right now?

I’m incredibly proud of our web design studio, Hello-World. We recently worked on a web design project for an avocado oil brand, Lula and are currently building Huey Lightshop 2.0 for a dream client.

Q What’s your style?

A few of my favourite projects: Lula, Meyers Manx, Huey Lightshop. I recently refreshed my portfolio site as well, which feels like a clear reflection of my design style and perspective: cool, experimental, refined.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

I’d love a mentor – someone who can push my thinking, offer honest feedback and help me stay focused on what will move me closer to my goals. ⭑.ᐟ

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

Just take the leap of faith and don’t be afraid to fail. In my 20s I struggled with university because I knew in my heart I was not passionate about my learning. I was working to fulfill someone else’s vision and in return I found zero inspiration in what I was doing. I would sit Joy down and say, “are you happy, no? then let’s make a change.”

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

I love sitting under the learning tree of anyone who is passionate in their own field. I want to know if there is a common denominator when it comes to inspiration.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

Branding, web design and development projects. I’d love to work with brands deeply rooted in art, culture, and fashion.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

My bucket list includes A24, The Strokes, Charli xcx, BLACKPINK – collabs with bold, boundary-pushing teams creating work that leaves a lasting cultural imprint.

Q: What is your rate?

My rate varies depending on the scope and complexity of the project. More info here.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Please feel free to email me at joyyiu@gmail.com.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

Reyna Dashefsky, the other half of Hello-World!
Rebekah Heffernan, a graphic designer who I really admire.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Daily learning. <3
