Q What do you do?

I love designing and developing sleek and innovative websites on Squarespace and Shopify — helping businesses foster their visual identities by bringing their creative ideas to life.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

After enrolling in the fun and engaging Squarespace Design Course by ilovecreatives, I found a passion for web design. This passion inspired me to enroll in further courses to enrich and broaden my creative horizons. The perspective I gained from this continued learning and the communities within made a lasting impact on me. This learning enabled me to collaborate with many brilliant studio owners and further extend my scope of practice. My current experimentation with design is done by practicing various explorations with text, visuals & aesthetic.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

Communication, quality, and speed.

Q What are you working on right now?

I’m incredibly proud of our web design studio, Hello-World. We recently launched MEMOR 2.0 for a dream client, and we’re currently in the process of creating a brand identity and an experiential landing page for a down-to-earth and cool photographer.

Q What’s your style?

I love anything that's innovative, motion-based and leaves users wanting more. Recent projects that showcase these aesthetics are Clear As Day, Juice House, Lastlight, and our studio site, Hello-World.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

I would love to hone in on my passion for translating ideas into visuals and focus more on web design. I’d also love to become more involved with web development because it challenges me to transition into a troubleshooting mode. Designing and developing a new site is exciting and something I’m always proud to accomplish.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

A lack of time! I currently have a bucket list of dream projects and topics I’d like to learn about (like creative coding and 3D graphics). There’s just not enough time in a day to do it all!

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

IG reels  ฅ՞•ﻌ•՞ฅ

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

Just take the leap of faith and don’t be afraid to fail. In my 20s I struggled with university because I knew in my heart I was not passionate about my learning. I was working to fulfill someone else’s vision and in return I found zero inspiration in what I was doing. I would sit Joy down and say, “are you happy, no? then let’s make a change.”

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

I love sitting under the learning tree of anyone who is passionate in their own field. I want to know if there is a common denominator when it comes to inspiration.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

Branding, web design and development projects. I’d love to work with brands deeply rooted in art, culture, and fashion.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

Joy meets Film Director. Joy meets Musician. Joy meets Art Director. I absolutely love working with the film and music industries. It’s really fulfilling to collaborate amongst those who have similar values and aren’t afraid of stepping outside the box.

Q: What is your rate?

Custom websites start at $5k, and turnaround time is approximately 4-6 weeks once all assets are received.

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Please feel free to email me at joyyiu@gmail.com.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

Reyna Dashefsky, the other half of Hello-World! She puts a lot of attention and care into her work and it always shows. She combines refinement with quirkiness in a completely unique way and she’s always able to blend those qualities to make a sophisticated product.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Daily learning.
