WHAT DO YOU DO?
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
When I decided to switch careers I began building a portfolio with the resources I had available, then did a soft business launch, then formed an official LLC, and most recently opened my own creative studio space in downtown LA.
How do you stand out in your field?
My use of color is what clients request the most and often tell me is what drew them to choose me for their projects. I try to keep my branding consistent on social media and also include some form of local outreach and projects that give back to women entrepreneurs.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I just completed a fashion shoot for a local accessories brand that I’m really excited to launch online. Other than that, trying to stay busy during quarantine with product shoots and mastering new editing software.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I love shooting in the studio where I have maximum control over the lighting and staging. I also love playing with color gels and working with models who bring their own bold fashion sense to the shoot. I think the recent shoot on my instagram page with drag queen @karenbeaches exemplifies this.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
My hope is to incorporate my passion for film studies and history, along with my past work experience in the film industry, into my photography in new and exciting ways. I love the cinematic shoots of Nadia Lee Cohen and the way she pays tribute to the various films she loves in her own brilliant and often twisted way.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
There are definitely pros and cons to running your own business. It can be hard to wear all of the hats in terms of marketing yourself, juggling clients, staying creative, keeping up with new editing software, etc. Time management is a challenge when there are so many distractions!
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
I would hire a marketing manager to run my instagram and create daily content, as well as strategy outreach. It can be so time consuming. Maybe also a retouching assistant.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
I always wanted to pursue a career in photography, but I was afraid of taking the leap right after college. So I ended up working in events and programming for indie film festivals, which I loved, but ultimately wasn’t what I wanted for myself long-term. I often think about how my path would have been different if I had really listened to myself at a younger age.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
I would love to chat with some of my favorite photographers on how they run a large set during a shoot and their advice for making their sets a welcoming, creative and respectful environment for everyone involved. Who they rely on for what tasks and how to tackle set challenges for a high-budget shoot. Also would love to hear about their creative process for developing their ideas and moodboards
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I’m looking for women entrepreneurs to collaborate with on creative projects for their businesses, as well as product and fashion shoots for various brands. I love working on new product launches, branding and lifestyle shoots, podcast and comedy shoots, etc.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
My ideal collaboration would be with a creative team who trusts one another’s process and input, for a publication or brand that values creativity and mutual respect. In a dream scenario I would of course love to work on a high-budget fashion shoot with a large original set designed just for us.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
My prices vary upon project/need, feel free to reach out via email and we can figure out pricing.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
They can email me at leejamesonphoto@gmail.com or DM me on instagram @leejamesonphoto. They can also reach me on my website leejameson.com
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
