Q What do you do?

I’m a video lead with extensive experience in editorial storytelling and branded content.

A jack-of-all-trades with expert-level experience directing, shooting, editing, and producing projects from start to finish if necessary.

Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?

For the last decade or so, I’ve been working up the “corporate ladder” within digital video while also balancing being open to select freelance and project-based roles as well. During that time, I was able to dabble in variety of sectors including branded content, sports, and news journalism, developing a strong sense of editorial judgement while mastering a good amount of hands-on production skills along the way. I started out in broadcast, producing for a newsroom, and slowly made my way into more creative avenues covering a variety of issues and types of people. That’s ultimately where my passion remains after all these years—being able to tell someone’s most authentic story through a lens.

Q How do you stand out in your field?

My efficiency— The value I place on time and energy not only translates for my personal life, but bleeds into my work as well. Regardless of what type of project I’m working on, I want to do things with a level of creative effectiveness but also efficiency—being able to marry those two things consistently. Of course there’s a lot of talent in the field, especially today with all the resources made available through the internet, but the ability to have enough humility and self-awareness to not only know your strengths but recognize and delegate weaknesses quickly is an attribute that isn’t discussed enough on applications or interviews.
Another thing— Cultural currency is still also one of the most undervalued assets in the workplace. No matter the job, what you bring to the table isn’t just a set of technical skills, it’s also your own unique perspective informed by both professional and personal life experiences. What you’ve gone through matters, and I think my life experiences also separates me from others.

Q What are you working on right now?

Open to collaborative project-based gigs from companies and brands, while also currently building out my own company.

Q What’s your style?

My style/perspective/taste is just finding ways to better authentically tell a story, whatever that might be (i.e., working directly with talent to figure out what or where makes them most comfortable, and in their element; or incorporating archival imagery and footage in post). I’m also a fan of symmetry in shot selections (think, Wes Anderson), and capturing unique hero shots, specifically ones that feel intimate, personal, or include moments relatable to an audience.
Example: Editorial storytelling + making your subject and their story feel intimate.
Example: Branded storytelling + this is the approach I would’ve taken in mixing culture and brand; very simple concept but very effective.

Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?

I actually enjoy writing and wouldn’t mind being a contributor at a publication. In terms of a/v content, maybe getting more into the audio space; specifically creating visual content around it. I’d also like to explore more sports-related content.

Q What is frustrating you right now?

I mean, I’m naturally introverted (not anti-social!). It’s definitely not that I’m afraid or lack confidence, I just prefer a good amount of observing before speaking. Again, big on time and energy, so mustering up the amount of extra energy it takes to effectively “network” is tough. I could be better.

Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?

Meal prep. My food apps are working overtime, almost on a daily basis. I’d save a small fortune. $20/hr, small price to pay.

Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?

Think—bigger.
Start investing in yourself and your future sooner. I’m big on planning, almost methodical about it, but there are maybe a few things I could’ve done (or not done) in my younger years that might have saved me some time down the line.

Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?

How to find and network with investors that align with my interests, vision, and ethical standards in an ideal world.

Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?

Full-time or contract roles within creative production and digital video. Also open-for-hire to project-based freelance collaborations as well.

Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.

Nike, Apple Music/Beats by Dre, Google, Springhill, Uninterrupted, PgLang, Great Big Story (pre-pandemic), and a few others.

Q What is your rate?

This will vary quite a bit depending on project and needs, so please just reach out. For the sake of the exercise, it could look something like:
Directing/Filming/Producing (Non-Fiction): $1000-$3000+/day (minimum, TBD)
Non-Linear Editing/Post Producing: $500-$1500/day (minimum, TBD)

Q How should someone approach you about working together?

Email is strongly preferred. marcgomes.info@gmail.com — Please provide name of project + client in subject line / project details and budget in initial message.

Q Who is a creative you admire?

@MillieToro is a creative and social strategist. One of the best in the business.

Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?

Be patient and work on any other unrelated goals in the meantime.
