Matt Libassi
Q What do you do?
I’m a photographer living and working in Los Angeles. I photograph on commission and in the street. My clients make up a wide array of people; musicians, models, clothing designers, actors, families. The common theme here is an interplay between subject and environment.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
Before photography, I worked in the music industry. Music has always been a passion and remains my chief influence.
I was working for Ryan Gentles who managed The Strokes at the time. Ryan sent me out on the road as a tour manager. Before I left, a friend gave me a digital point-and-shoot camera. I photographed the band on the road and shot vignette videos. It became clear pretty quickly that I was enjoying photographing more than I was tending to my professional responsibilities. I spent the next three years photographing on the street in New York City.
In 2019 I moved to Los Angeles to pursue commissioned work.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I’m me.
Q What are you working on right now?
Couple months back I photographed several of Boi-1da’s studio sessions. Many great artists in the room: Sevn Thomas, Austin Powerz, Jahaan Sweet, Lurtz, Chiv Barot, Murda Beatz. Inspiration all around. Next month I am shooting a campaign for Phiaton, a new headphone brand owned by Sony. I’m also working on a book that centers around Los Angeles.
Q What’s your style?
New Balance 990s and hoodies.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I’d like to DJ more often.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
The New Orleans Saints offense
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Remind me to move my car for alternate side parking.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
‘Write the book you want to read’.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
Marketing.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
Anything involving people. Campaign, editorial, documentary. Go on tour with musicians. Shoot fashion on the street and inside old Hollywood mansions.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
One that is free of ego and centers around service. A story is being told. Photographing on location; multiple locations.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Q Who is a creative you admire?
Matthew Samuels, aka Boi-1da. Matt carries a level of humility that is fully in synch with his talent. To me, this is the definition of cool.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Read, listen to music. Watch Roger Federer highlight reels.
