I work with individuals to build a brand from scratch or freshen up the look through logo design, color palettes, website layouts, social media content, business cards, and packaging (etc). I also work with music artists creating single/album artwork, posters, merchandise combining the art of design, illustration, and typography. Aside from client work, I've self-published a book titled, "Because, Honestly": a collection of illustrations and text pieces expressing simple and honest human thoughts and feelings. I also have "The Recollection", an extension of "Because, Honestly" as an online publication with a focus on handwritten submissions that explore a theme through a question. I also create music with my sister, and on occasion, write.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I had to make a few wrong turns to find what's right for me. I went to university for graphic design and dropped out a year and a half later. Then I experimented with different mediums, made things I liked, even if they were bad, and I'd share them on Facebook or on a blog. Created my own series of work, and started taking on small client projects from friends. I tried my best to keep my online presence honest and transparent, which has helped me grow to where I am now.
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
I think a lot of people in my field overlook the very small details when in fact it’s those small details that make a design stronger. Whether it be a matter of kerning or smoothing an edge of an illustration, this all matters in the end. There’s also a lot of comparison in my field, and a lot of people compare their work to each other, especially with the various online platforms, which makes the work out there look very alike. It’s difficult to find a fresh outlook on design that combines intriguing visuals as well as thought, something I challenge myself to bring into each project I work on.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I’m currently working on a client’s branding - new logo, website, and business cards. I’m also expanding my personal brand through new products and artwork, and upcoming collaborations.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
The band I have with my sister, Sonagur, reflects the core of who I am: musically inclined, visually appealing, and thought provoking. The visuals having being created and directed by us are influenced by what attracts us. Like films, the 60s and 80s, space, geometry, words and color.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
Creative direction - I love working with my hands and putting sets together/plan shoots. I would love to work more in the film industry with this skill.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
Not being paid on time, having to constantly follow up with clients especially with invoices, and updating my website + shop.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Answer my emails, update my shop, brainstorm new marketing strategies and help executing them, get a coffee and pastry with me.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
Grade 9 - I wish I could tell her that the red and white platform shoes Dad got you are actually really cool and you should have kept them because they're in style. I got made fun of for wearing those shoes but I loved them. And I want to encourage myself to believe in my instincts because they're good.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
Film and the process behind it.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Design, fashion collaborations, music opportunities, film opportunities, illustration projects, creative direction opportunities, social media content producing, writing.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
Working on a film set creating art or designing (that and collaborating with Gucci).
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
It depends on the project and the value of the work in the project. For instance, a logo and website layout design with business card package costs between $5,000-$6,000.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
I like a small introduction to the company/brand/individual with a link to the work/brand, and context to the project idea. If there's a budget, that's also good to know.
And GIFS are always welcome.
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Watch films that make me cry.
