WHAT DO YOU DO?
Right now I’m focused on learning, learning, and learning! I’m constantly challenging myself to learn new skills, conduct deep design research, and grow as a creative person. As a freelance junior designer, I dissect briefs and create design solutions that have purpose. I throw myself into each part of the creative process to help clients fully realize their vision.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I went to Boston University and finished my degree in Communication last year. I started by making a ton of ads in school, and then I interned as an art direction intern at Arnold Worldwide in Boston. I also watched a million YouTube videos to teach myself Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects etc. Since then I’ve been learning more about design theory, digital design and typography.
How do you stand out in your field?
I’m fairly new here but I feel that I have a very honest approach with my work. I’m genuinely curious as a designer, I’m always trying to explore the less obvious approach. I try to use an interesting variety of art and culture elements to inform my work. I always want my work to be a bit fun and left of center. Also, I’m never afraid to bug design friends with questions, I think it’s important to surround yourself with other creatives early on.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
I’ve used quarantine to completely redevelop my portfolio and get myself ready to apply for jobs & internships. I took a 2-week portfolio bootcamp by The Design Kids (Frankie is the best!) that reinvigorated my passion for design. Right now, I’m freelancing at Honor Code Creative part-time, developing a new denim line with a good friend (@weardaya), and continuing my self education with Skillshare. I’ve recently been focused on web design, typography, and a little bit of 3D animation.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
This is my favorite question to think about but I’m never sure how to answer. I’m heavily influenced by underground fashion magazines and experimental editorial work. I love mixing elements of high and low. Like contrasting strict bold type with handwritten or hand drawn elements. I’d say overall my style is typographic, feminine, and artful. Though I enjoy working across a variety of styles with completely different perspectives. I’d say my style and taste is represented well by my design of Paradigm Magazine. Two of my favorite designers right now are Lisbeth Antoine and Chloe Scheffe.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
I wish to focus more on animation and 3D design. These tend to be the most time consuming technically, so they often get put off. But the more I play with them the quicker I get (and the better the results)!
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
I’ve gotten to a place where I’m ready and eager to gain more experience from seasoned creatives. Sometimes I feel frustrated with my growing technical skills, so I think more practice, guidance and mentorship would help move me along!
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
I would definitely have them around to bounce ideas and directions off of! I appreciate having fresh perspectives around.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
Web design and web development 100%. I’m dying to know more!
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
I’m looking for an internship or junior level design opportunity at a studio or creative agency. Also super interested in working with some local creatives on collaborative freelance projects. I’m also looking for a design/art direction mentor (short-term totally cool!).
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
My ideal job would be at a studio that specializes in brand identity, web design and/or editorial design work. And in an *ideal* world, a studio that works in the culture/art/fashion realm. The perfect collaboration would be with writers, photographers, and other designers who align with my style. I’ve always wanted to make a magazine, so that would be cool. Working with the team at Honor Code Creative has set the bar for me in terms of working with amazing people. They’re super authentic, smart and just really kind. It’s always a pleasure to do work for them.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
I’d like to be contacted via Instagram DM or email, and I’m always down for a good GIF or meme. An idea, budget, scope and purpose helps create a good outline for any project!
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Music, loud!
