Tilde Snyder
Q What do you do?
I also do creative direction for social media and a bit of illustration, photography, and design work from time to time.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I’ve always been a highly creative person with a multitude of interests. I spent my childhood reading voraciously, writing passionately, and exploring every artistic medium I could get my hands on.
I studied Computer Science and Fashion Design as an undergrad in Austin, then moved to London where I did an MA in Design at Goldsmiths, honing my writing and creative research skills. After that, I started freelancing and teaching English in Madrid. I spent some time copywriting for an NYC agency where I got to sharpen my fashion, wellness, and beauty expertise, while dipping my toes into creative direction. Then, I moved to Rome to do a second MA in Art History, where I decided to dedicate myself fully to being a freelance creative.
I’ve also worked in contemporary art galleries and for a university art department doing communications and writing curriculum. I believe in a holistic, lifelong approach to learning where every experience contributes to my growth as a creative, especially as a writer.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
I have a strong academic background, so I can take complex information and break it into something more snappy for social media or web. I combine wit with the ability to do serious research. I’m equally fluent in art theory and skincare science as I am in memes and internet microtrends. I take pride that my style is very adaptable, and my knowledge is broad.
Q What are you working on right now?
I’m writing a book about material culture and travel, centered on Rome. I also have an ongoing visual art project exploring Attic and Etruscan pottery and decorative arts.
Q What’s your style?
As an American who has spent a large part of my adult life living and traveling (mostly alone) in Europe, I’ve gained a broad perspective and been influenced by people of a variety of backgrounds, which is reflected in my work. I’m highly adaptable and culturally fluent. I have an affinity for both high and low art; I love Fellini’s 8 ½ as much as I love The Simple Life. I’m a ~deep thinker~, but I love to be a little silly and irreverent.
For an Instagram series I creative directed and wrote for Supima Cotton, I used archival imagery to create engaging content that underlined the brand’s heritage and place in fashion history in a social friendly way.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I really enjoy researching and writing long-form articles, so finding an ongoing collaboration where I could focus on this type of content would be ideal for me (especially if it’s related to skincare or textiles—subjects I can speak for hours about!)
Q What is frustrating you right now?
Time moves far too swiftly, and I never have enough hours in the day for all the things I want to do. Finding balance between my many interests is an ongoing struggle.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
I would love someone who could respond to emails, fix me snacks, and help curate my productivity playlist to suit different tasks.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I would go back to 2017 when I left London and tell myself everything is going to work out. I’ve forged an independent and unconventional path in the intervening years, which was immensely challenging at times.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
I am very interested in writing as a process and how different writers approach it in a personal way, so I would love to ask one of my favorite authors to break down a day in their life. I’m especially intrigued by rituals and other idiosyncrasies that are part of individual practice.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
I will write just about anything that compels me, from website copy and social media captions to blog posts and thinkpieces. The important aspect is being compelled. I want to write for clients with interesting projects and brands with unique approaches.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
I would absolutely love to write fragrance copy! I'm enchanted by capturing the fantasy and imagery that scent can conjure in words. I’m also very interested in brands that value things like artisanship, craft, sustainability, and heritage in the fashion/textile world.
Q What is your rate?
My hourly rate starts at $50, however I generally prefer a project-based rate.
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Send me an email (tildesnyder@gmail.com). I appreciate practical details such as budget and scope, but I also love a good moodboard or other inspiration material!
Q Who is a creative you admire?
Kassie Shanafelt: a great writer and an all-around great person who is always there to bounce ideas off of and generally just gets it.
Luca Giannone: tattoo artist, illustrator, and graphic designer extraordinaire who inspires me every day. "
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Going for runs and gardening keep me grounded; museums and libraries keep my ideas fresh.
