I took the Squarespace Design Course to level up my knowledge of Squarespace, custom coding and be a part of the ilovecreatives community. At the time I bought the course in 2021, I was a Freelance Content Producer, creating mostly social content, and I wanted to move away from social towards web design. When I was half way through the course I had a difficult freelance client that totally burnt me out, so I dropped everything and got a job at a restaurant. In 2025 I was ready to give freelancing a try again — luckily, the ilovecreatives team was super helpful with getting me back in the new course format (LOTS has changed). Now, 5 years after starting, I got that SDC trophy! Staying active in the Discord really helped me make that final push to finish the course. I know this course and the ilovecreatives community are going to continue to be valuable resources as I navigate my freelancing 2.0 journey.
While taking this course, I learned that the websites I like to visit aren’t necessarily the websites I want to make. I love the slightly chaotic y2k, early internet aesthetic — turns out, not my fave to create. I love world building and creating visual content to help break the boundaries of Squarespace. As a Libra, I am inherently adaptable, so I prefer a chameleonic approach to working with clients.
I love that the course content is entertaining, I feel like I was able to retain the information better because I was laughing and learning at the same time. BUT my most favorite thing about the course is the Discord. When I came back to the course after my super extended break, I made sure to attend as many Super Productive Times as possible. It was huge for my progress and accountability, and nice to connect with the regulars every week.
This course is definitely for the creative, neurodivergent thinkers! The edutainment gives us novelty, the Discord community creates belonging, the Custom Site is a fun challenge, you get rewards (digital cookies) that you can redeem for code snippets and extra reviews, and the Notion workbook is where you get all that “cross off your to-do list” dopamine.
About a month after I got the trophy, I signed a Web Development monthly retainer contract! The skills I learned in the SDC definitely helped me seal the deal. Also, the inspiration and encouragement from the Discord community helped me stay focused on my goals — most of us are on the Freelancer path in there so it’s a safe space to share your struggles, and wins!
