As a creative problem solver I’m curious AF and I recognize that the prevalence of user-centered design practices today is a sign that our society needs a serious dose of humanity injected back into technology.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
Many missteps and gut decisions led me here today. Leaving community college in 2003 with zero academic motivations was my first true step. Pursuing music school in 2004 resulted in a decade marked by touring / recording as a multi-instrumentalist. Apprenticing with tea masters from 2009 - 2013 has sprouted a philosophy for which I live my life by, not to mention provided me with fertile soil from which to grow a daily tea practice. Explorations into the realm of visual / contemporary art from 2013 - 2015 led me to stumble into User Experience Design. Plunging into the field of UX in 2015 with a community like General Assembly was the first time choosing anything resembling academia in well over a decade. 2015 also transformed me into a first-time dad. Since then I’ve been freelancing as a UX / UI Designer with ad/marketing agencies in LA and offering a unique service that combines ’Tea Ceremony with Team Building’. For 2019 I’m committed to weaving all previous incarnations together and focusing on helping develop more health + wellness brands along with their corresponding digital footprints. I’m also launching a podcast called ‘wabi-sabi’ which is a show that celebrates life through the lens of imperfections…family, money, design, tea, work, culture, parenthood, and more… all discussions happening over tea.
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
patience. perspective. just simply giving a damn
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I’m a mammal. I like to adapt to shifting circumstances, stakeholder needs, environments, and so forth.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
Ask me over tea.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
We’re turning into a society of independent contractors / side hustlers with no collective bargaining power. No unionizing. No ethics. No collective conversation. Just FB/twitter echo chambers where we allow trolls to fling shit on anything. Wages decreasing while competition increases. This is magnified x1000000 by being a parent in the US of A. We’re pressured by families and society to bring humans into this world and when we have the hutzpah to do so we’re severely punished by an utter lack of empathy, isolated nuclear family units, unimaginable childcare costs, and signing your time away from your child by commuting to work and back.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HOUR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Promote my services across all appropriate channels.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
Tell my 12-year old self that my parents divorce was not my fault and they were actually just doing the best they could. Tell my 22 year old self that family estrangement is real, your parent suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder and don't turn back. Go back 5 years to 30 and dive quicker into UX.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Health + wellness brands that want to collaborate. Teams that want a pragmatic approach to mindfulness through Tea Ceremony. Experience design that benefits society.
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
One that values holistic thinking, research, and iterating. one that doesn't use me to cram into the end of their project budget and asks for the world in 4 days. one that pays on time and respects sovereignty.
WHAT IS YOUR RATE?
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
