Q What do you do?
The memes about social media marketers doing 30 people’s jobs are pretty accurate. I would say I have my hands in a little bit of everything in terms of digital marketing.
But specifically, I do social media marketing, social media and marketing strategy, content creation, influencer relations, and paid social media ads.
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
Well, I moved across Canada, worked unpaid internships and tried to stay motivated and driven. After interning for FREE😭 I got my first job as an e-commerce and social media specialist at a clothing company. From there, I went over to a PR agency and then moved over to hospitality marketing. I loved what I was doing but once I started to dabble in freelance marketing, I decided to take everything I had learned while working corporate and freelancing and started my company, Grow Digital.
I think persistency, being okay with making mistakes and mentorships are all key factors in where I am today.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
By staying humble and having a positive attitude. I show passion, enthusiasm and I actually care about the work I’m delivering/doing. I always try to think of imaginative ways to solve new and existing clients' business needs.
This quote from Dale Carnegie really resonated with me “Being interested is more important than being interesting.”
Q What are you working on right now?
Currently trying to scale my business, find new clients and network with likeminded professionals in my field.
In terms of my day-to-day, right now I’m working on a landing page for a clients, setting up some Tiktok and Google ads, developing a few social media content calendars for various clients and working on a mid-year wrap report!
Q What’s your style?
I feel like my style really varies. Sometimes I like moody and luxurious but then there are times I’ll see stuff like product packaging or art that’s colourful, bright and cheery which I find really fun and eye-catching. I think it depends on my mood but generally, I would say I gravitate towards sophistication with a bit of flare, if that even makes sense.
Think all black with a pop of colour or sparkle!
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
Outside of my business, Grow Digital, I’m an editor for fleetstreetmag.com and manage their social media channels. It’s a bit of a passion project between myself and another editor. I really love working on stories about fashion, beauty, fitness and food. If I had more time, I would focus on this a lot more.
Q What is frustrating you right now?
How pay-to-play social media has become. 📱
It’s kind of like a casino and the house always wins.📉 From an organic perspective, it’s really difficult to break through the noise and be seen when there is so much competition. From a paid perspective it can be a tough pill to swallow for small businesses when they’re putting money into platforms like META and Tiktok and their results are not generating results that generate a return on investment. It’s sad because the small ones can’t really compete.
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Work on reporting decks, scheduling content, community management, and maybe even have them pitch brands who could benefit from some social media management support.
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
I’d probably transport myself back to 2017 when I was in between jobs and not sure what was next for me. I would tell myself to not let other people get me down, try to stop worrying so much about what people think of me and remember that everything happens for a reason.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
Scaling a business and probably how to pitch myself and my business.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
Social media opportunities! I love CPG brands and it’s so much fun taking someone's brand and telling their story through social media and content creation.
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
I love clients or campaigns that allow us to have fun with the content. Because platforms like Tiktok are so fast-paced and quick with trends, you need to be able to act fast. If not, you risk losing out on potential viral opportunities.
Q What is your rate?
My rates are never set in stone and they vary based on scope of work. Send me an email at danielle@growdigital.co and we can create a custom proposal for your needs!
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
Send me an email at📧 danielle@growdigital.co, a DM 👉at @danielle_goguen or on my business page at 📲 @growdigital! I always like to know the scope of work before we proceed just to make sure it falls under my expertise so that I can help you!
Q Who is a creative you admire?
I don’t know this person IRL but I love @thepacman82. He makes the coolest fashion videos that integrate visual FX – you just know the editing took him hours to do. That is what I call scroll-stopping content.
Q Oh! and… how do you stay creative?
Pinterest keeps my creative juices flowing 🧃
