WHAT DO YOU DO?

I create engaging, accessible, and affordable custom Squarespace websites.

I also make photo portraits of humans and design logos, brochures, Instagram stories — you name it!

WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

I’ve been stoked about photography since high school, and I got hooked on design when I built my first photo book as a fun side project in college. Since then, I’ve been sharpening my design skills by taking on pro-bono projects for friends and family, spending hours in online forums, and watching endless YouTube videos. I’m scrappy and resourceful and love finding ways to increase my value to my clients by taking on new skills and challenges.

How do you stand out in your field?

I am really intent on creating designs that are, above all, easy to understand and interact with. With that said, my designs lean towards minimalism, but I try and imbue a fun and quirky side to each. I really like working with clients to help their website dreams come to life, and I am incredibly detail-oriented and always aiming toward perfection (I know, I know, it’s not possible — but a girl can dream!).

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

I’m currently building a website for my dad’s new business and I’m also wrapping up a really fun website for a vintage re-seller in Brooklyn. Get you a girl that can do both!

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?

Minimalism with a lil’ something special. I worked on this website for a local skincare maker earlier this year and I think it captures the work I really love to make. It’s clean and easy to navigate, but there are still some fun and engaging easter eggs throughout the site. → www.mavenmaderva.com

WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?

I wish I could spend more of my time working on web design. I’m lucky to have a flexible full-time job that allows me to take on side projects, but I’d love to dedicate more of my time to them.

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?

I’m enrolled in a handful of online courses to help me sharpen up my skills with Wordpress and Shopify, but I can’t seem to make the time for them. With my main gig and side projects, the courses keep getting pushed to the bottom of the list even though I’m really dying to work on them.

IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?

Oof, this is tough. I think I’d pay someone to clean my house? I really love my work, but it’s the little things like cleaning or cooking that can really bog me down.

LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?

I wish I would’ve told myself before entering college that connections are key! I’m a bit of an introvert and mostly kept to myself throughout college. It wasn’t until later that I realized how instrumental my friends and acquaintances were in helping me get photo and design gigs. Now I know how important it is to meet new people and share your work with friends.

IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?

I recently talked to a career coach (who offered her services pro-bono to ilovecreatives Squarespace Course attendees) and it was super valuable. We talked about all the things I’m interested in and how to best market myself to clients and employers. It was the expert advice I had been craving for years! 10/10 would strongly recommend.

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Any and all web design and branding projects + product and portrait photography.

DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.

It’s awesome when a client knows exactly what they want, but it’s also super fun to dive into a project when a client has *no* idea what they want. I love experimenting, exploring, and collaborating to land on an awesome final product that we’re all stoked on.

HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?

I’d love to set up a call as soon as we can! It’s so much easier and simpler to communicate intent over the phone. I’d also love to know the scope of your project and any inspo photos/screenshots you want to share would be awesome :-)
