Well, I used to be a wedding planner and decided I wanted my weekends back (who wouldn't?). I dove into project management since it's very similar work – moving a creative vision from some photos and ideas to a concrete, final product. I'm the horse carrying the plow forward, if you will. Right now, I'm at the men's apparel + lifestyle brand, Saturdays NYC, working on new product categories that expand beyond apparel and iterating on our e-commerce website to make the shopping experience better. I work mostly between the creative and tech departments.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I got out Texas and out of my comfort zone right after college graduation. I still can't believe I did that...moving to DC knowing no one but wanting to pursue wedding planning. Breaking out of my introverted ways, I met people and ended up moving from DC to New York a couple years ago, hoping to work with a well-curated brand. I lucked out starting as a Showroom Manager/Admin Assistant at Saturdays NYC. Aiming to move up from the ground floor, I worked really hard for 6 months to prove myself and show I had the chops to organize and manage well. I started taking on extra tasks as we had some role vacancies in E-commerce and Creative and became vital to both departments. At 10 months, I got the promotion I had been working for and here I am!
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
From what I've seen, personal skills are sometimes lacking, more so in working hand in hand with tech. You have to be able to manage personalities and be diplomatic, which working in weddings taught me well.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
At Saturdays, I'm working on a new grooming line (mum's the word!) launching later this year. It's the first time we're getting into this product category so it's very exciting. On the side, I freelance as a stationery blogger at Oh So Beautiful Paper, featuring small businesses and how they run behind the scenes. I love paper!
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I'm mostly a minimalist, except when it comes to plants. I think everything should be purposeful, simple, and clean. There are a few events (like Nearly Impossible) and photoshoots I've planned + designed that I'm proud of, but most notably I helped rebrand and design this wedding photographer's website – I even dabbled in coding all the special hover features you see! It's a great mix of my visual design and technical work.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
I would love to go back and do some smaller scale events that are beautifully curated. Unfortunately New York apartments are small, but the city is big! I just haven't had extra bandwidth to make something happen.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
I've taken on a lot of responsibilities at my day job and I'm starting to wane. Wearing multiple hats is great when you know you're getting into it from the get go. I'm ready to focus on creative project management 100% and have some head space for fun projects and events!
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
Oh, I wish I would have left DC a little sooner to explore the opportunities in New York because it's so close and I still get to go back to DC often enough. I was hanging on to freelance life when I was craving the time balance of a full-time role.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
I'd love to chat about product management in the tech field and what to learn to become better. It'd also be interesting to get advice in a print perspective of how magazine's work in terms of project management.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Project or Product Management roles at a Fashion, Design, or Home Goods company. I'm looking into agencies as well, though I've never worked in one.
On the side, I'd love to collaborate on any events for a small group of people from design to coordination!
WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
My ideal job would be at a mid-size company with start-up vibes and great company values where I can really work hand-in-hand with the creative department in creating physical products.
My ideal collaboration would be creating amazing dinner or brunch parties for creatives to connect in my area. I'd love to start something up with anyone in NYC.
WHAT IS YOUR RATE?
It's so dependent on the project or role! Reach out if you want to talk shop.
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Getting a change of scenery is #1 on the list. I love traveling (hence my double entendre social media handles) and gather creative juices from changing landscapes, museums, and even restaurant experiences! Music is another major player in my creative flow if I can't escape physically. Seeing live shows is a favorite activity of mine – it's so rejuvenating to see (and hear) talented musicians. It's inspiring.
