Nichole Bosso
Q What steps did you take to get to where you are now?
I started my career with a focus on brand and digital design, developing marketing campaigns, brand packages, illustrations, directing photo shoots and video campaigns, etc. My love for design however always led me to digital products, initially digging my toes into the strategic side of UX design and research, and when I finally decided to work for myself in 2019, I began growing my product portfolio.
I've since designed multiple brand and e-commerce websites, redesigned the UI for a SaaS based web application, fully designed two mobile apps, and designed and illustrated a teaching website for a research brand of Seattle Children's Hospital.
Q How do you stand out in your field?
My experience in brand and marketing has always aided me in developing products because my focus is not only on the UX and UI of the product for the users, but also the internal maintenance by the brand and marketing teams. There is so much power in building systems that benefit both the user and the teams building the vision of your company. I've been incredibly lucky to have been on so many sides of design and their inevitable impact on each other from a strategic standpoint seems to never end!
Q What are you working on right now?
Right now I'm working on an internal web application that helps streamline a health insurance company's workflow to get patient's their medications more quickly (as well as protect them from price gouging). I'm also working on a health based mobile app that aims to educate and empower those with hormonal cycles to understand their body's needs and how to best support it through each phase.
Q What’s your style?
I love clean, thoughtful, but bold design that emphasizes the importance of content without losing all of the fun! Consistency is key for me, which may seem a bit boring, but if you want your brand and product to be bold and memorable, having a design system is essential.
Q Out of all your slashies, which one do you wish you could do more often?
I would love to illustrate more! I was lucky enough to illustrate dozens of assets for a children's hospital website I recently finished and it was a really fun, playful project, even with such a serious subject matter. Illustration can really add to a digital product and that project was even more rewarding for allowing me to do it!
Q What is frustrating you right now?
The creative world is always changing and adapting is always a part of it. I’d love to be able to explore and experiment more while still pushing to provide the best work across all of the new and interesting platforms being developed. Tech moves so fast, but we creatives do too, so, challenge accepted!
Q If you could hire someone for $20/hour, what would you have them do to make your day easier?
Paperwork — the dreaded, dreaded paperwork!
Q What do you wish you could have told yourself, when, and why?
Don’t be afraid to explore combining mediums! I’ve always been excited to play with different mediums and we’re lucky that right now, physical media and digital media are really having quite the love affair.
Q If you could talk to an expert to gain more insight on something, what would it be about?
Running a small business! I continue to do a lot of research and have certainly come a long way from where I was in my early 20s, but there’s always more to learn when it comes to running a small business. My motto has always been that it’s ok not to know something, but it’s fundamentally essential to admit that you don’t know it.
Q What kind of opportunities/projects are you looking for?
My primary passion and focus at the moment is in mobile and web applications, as well as traditional website design. That said, I do still love branding and illustration, so if those are a part of it, I'll truly be overjoyed!
Q Describe your ideal job/client/collaboration.
An ideal client, for me, actually revolves around collaboration! I’ve always been a cross-functional liaison on my design teams and it’s impacted the way I approach my work with my own clients now. The work itself will always vary, but the teamwork that goes into it will also be key!
Q: What is your rate?
I traditionally do value based project proposals that are built around the detailed specs of a project. Every project I do starts off with a conversation around your budget and I provide a breakdown of cost per package and the listed assets, including rounds of feedback, that would be included in that package! To give an idea of that range, my prices are based around my $100 an hour rate. I have a PDF that includes my starting rates and ranges, as well as summarizes my general services, that I would be happy to send along! Send me an email or fill out the form on my website to get started!
Q How should someone approach you about working together?
I have a form on my website that you can use to introduce yourself or feel free to send me an email (nichole@nicholebosso.com) to get started!
