Brand identity and illustration are my jam.
WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?
I studied fine art in college and focused on design in order to pursue a career path where I could do what I really love. I’ve switched between working at agencies and freelance. While each has pros and cons, I’m currently growing my freelance business.
FOR OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR FIELD, WHAT DO THEY USUALLY LACK?
I feel there is a lack of energy and authenticity that is achieved through hand drawing. Many designers only work with the computer and as a consequence, the work out there feels generic and lacks depth and personality.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?
Character illustrations for a promo video for a community organization.
WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?
I love minimal simplistic designs, great typography, and subtle details.
WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?
I want to focus more on brand identity designs. I want to work industries that are focused on craft and creating a more interesting or enjoyable world through the product or service.
WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?
It’s frustrating when designers are not given a seat at the table. Designers are often only brought in when it’s time to produce the work but designers don’t just produce pretty things, they are strategic thinkers who can help solve business problems.
IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?
Manage finances! I majored in art for a reason, I’m terrible at math and have no patience for busy work.
LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?
Don’t be afraid to say no. Not every project is meant for you. Sometimes it’s better to pass it off to a designer that fits the job description better or to give yourself breathing room for other things.
IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?
How to be better at networking.
WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Creating a brand identity for an artisan skincare product or food related product. Anything that involves logos and packaging!
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL JOB/CLIENT/COLLABORATION.
My ideal collaboration would involve like minded clients that appreciate craft and putting something out there that everyone is really proud of. Clients that are willing to put in the time and effort to achieve perfection.
WHAT IS YOUR HOURLY RATE, RETAINER, OR SALARY RANGE?
My hourly is $40. I offer flat rates for certain types of projects. For example, a logo is $500.
HOW SHOULD SOMEONE APPROACH YOU ABOUT WORKING TOGETHER?
Via email with basic project details including budget and scope. A hilarious gif is always appreciated.
HOW DO YOU STAY CREATIVE?
Pause and take a look around.
