WHAT DO YOU DO?

I work with my business partner and best friend to help brands build their aesthetic, while simultaneously building customer loyalty.

Sometimes this takes us through the journey of designing logos, directing video, creating content for advertising, social media, and collaborating with multidisciplinary artists.

 

WHAT STEPS DID YOU TAKE TO GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW?

I started my first creative business in photography (at an online magazine called The Trinidad Times) when I was 12! 😮 and got Photoshop around the same time (back when it was on a CD). Sounds absolutely ridiculous now, but if I'm honest this is where it all started. My love for directing a photoshoot and a visual aesthetic eventually led me to SCAD - The University for Creative Careers where I graduated with a BFA in Advertising with a focus in Art Direction. While interning at local agencies in my country working on projects ranging from Branding, Typesetting, Editorial Design, Brand Strategy and Corporate Communication work; Annual Reports, Websites, Administrative Reports and more.

Now, I own and Co-founded Marq Studio a boutique design studio with my business partner & best friend, who also went to SCAD. We partner with brands by joining their team in an intimate and in-depth dive to help build their aesthetic, vibe, presence, and message. Our work ranges from Brand Strategy, Brand Identity, Art Direction, Digital Marketing & Design, Web Design, Visual Merchandising and more.

How do you stand out in your field?

My approach to design is unique, a fusion of both left brain and right brain; logic, aesthetics, and strategy. Being from a culturally diverse Island in the Caribbean I can easily adapt and connect with a range of people and brands globally. I like to think that everything in my life; my ethnic diversity, family, schooling, travel, have blended together to put me in the position to be open-minded, and empathetic toward people's needs, feelings, and emotions.

 

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW?

Right now we’re working with a Food Truck Company to develop and design their Brand Identity, Brand Strategy, Style Guide and Social Media. As well as with a Med-Spa, Swim & Festival Wear Brand, and a few new prospective clients 🤞

WHAT'S YOUR STYLE/PERSPECTIVE/TASTE? DO YOU HAVE A PROJECT THAT REPRESENTS THIS?

My style is sleek, clean, refined, classic and timeless. I really believe if you can ignore fads and get down to things that really live on and resonate then you can make a lasting impression.

 

WE ARE ALL SLASHIES WITH MULTIPLE SKILLS, WHICH ONE DO YOU WISH YOU COULD DO MORE OFTEN?

We would love to work on Art Direction and Design for sustainable, luxury brands of any size and industry. Though we’re always open to any brand that can expand our horizons and challenge us.

 

WHAT IS FRUSTRATING YOU RIGHT NOW?

Finding a healthy working rhythm. (Does anyone have this these days?)

 

IF YOU COULD HIRE SOMEONE FOR $20/HR, WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE THEM DO TO MAKE YOUR DAY EASIER?

Someone to manage Marq Studio’s social media with the content we all create.

LET'S BRING OUT THE TIME MACHINE. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU COULD HAVE TOLD YOURSELF, WHEN, AND WHY?

When I graduated and started working with a Government Communications Company - I wish I could have told myself sooner that It’s not necessary to work in an office job to make a difference or feel fulfilled, you don’t have to box yourself in. Working for yourself will mean 24/7 but it will be more fulfilling than anything you’re doing now.

 

IF YOU COULD TALK TO AN EXPERT TO GAIN MORE INSIGHT ON SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE ABOUT?

I would love to sit with an experienced Business advisor (often). Sometimes with being a creative you can shove these “non-exciting” things to the side and get to them later. I don’t want to make that mistake.

 

WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES/PROJECTS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

I can’t say we’re looking for one type of project or opportunity, but we're definitely looking to collaborate with brands that understand the need for design that aligns with their goals, that trust us to know that we care to help them get there, and that we have their best interest in mind at all times and phases of the creative process. We take it all to heart.
